What is the sensor size of the Olympus E-PM1?
The Olympus PEN E-PM1 is a digital camera that has a Four Thirds sensor at its core. This imager measures 17.3mm in width and 13.0mm in height, so that the total imaging area of the sensor amounts to 225 mm2.
The E-PM1 provides an image resolution of 12.2 megapixels, based on 4 032 horizontal pixels and 3 024 vertical pixels.
Sensor size comparison with a film slide
The sensor diagonal measures 21.6mm, which gives rise to a format factor (or crop factor) of 2.0. Hence, the Olympus E-PM1 is a crop-sensor camera, as its sensor is smaller than a traditional 35mm film slide or negative.
Sensor specs and performance
The table below compares the sensor specs of the Olympus E-PM1 to those of several similar cameras. The reported DXO values are indicators of the sensor's imaging quality (higher is better), covering color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape), and high-ISO noise (DXO Sports). Larger sensor cameras tend to outperform cameras of the same generation that are equipped with a smaller imager. On the other hand, larger sensors are more expensive and require bigger and heavier lenses than smaller light receptors.
