Sony RX100 V versus Nikon D7100
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V and the Nikon D7100 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in October 2016 and February 2013. The RX100 V is a fixed lens compact, while the D7100 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an one-inch (RX100 V) and an APS-C (D7100) sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D7100 is considerably larger (146 percent) than the Sony RX100 V. It is noteworthy in this context that the D7100 is splash and dust-proof, while the RX100 V does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the RX100 V has a lens build in, whereas the D7100 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The RX100 V was launched at a lower price than the D7100, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Sony RX100 V vs Nikon D7100
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony RX100 V features an one-inch sensor and the Nikon D7100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D7100 is 216 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24MP, the D7100 offers a higher resolution than the RX100 V (20MP), but the D7100 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 2.41μm for the RX100 V) due to its larger sensor. However, the RX100 V is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 7 months) than the D7100, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the D7100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the D7100 offers substantially better image quality than the RX100 V (overall score 13 points higher). The advantage is based on 1.4 bits higher color depth, 1.3 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.1 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the RX100 V provides a higher video resolution than the D7100. The RX100 V is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the D7100 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the D7100 was succeeded by the Nikon D7200.
