Sony RX100 II versus Sony RX1R II
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2013 and October 2015. Both the RX100 II and the RX1R II are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an one-inch (RX100 II) and a full frame (RX1R II) sensor. The RX100 II has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the RX1R II provides 42.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony RX1R II is notably larger (24 percent) than the Sony RX100 II. Moreover, the RX1R II is substantially heavier (80 percent) than the RX100 II. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the RX100 II nor the RX1R II are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The RX100 II was launched at a markedly lower price (by 77 percent) than the RX1R II, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Sony RX100 II vs Sony RX1R II
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony RX100 II features an one-inch sensor and the Sony RX1R II a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the RX1R II is 638 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 42.2MP, the RX1R II offers a higher resolution than the RX100 II (20MP), but the RX1R II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.50μm versus 2.41μm for the RX100 II) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the RX1R II is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 3 months) than the RX100 II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the RX1R II has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the RX1R II offers substantially better image quality than the RX100 II (overall score 30 points higher). The advantage is based on 3.3 bits higher color depth, 1.5 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.7 stops in additional low light sensitivity. The RX100 II is equipped with a zoom lens, while the RX1R II comes with a build-in prime. The RX100 II has a 28-100mm f/1.8-4.9 optic and the RX1R II offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the RX100 II provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the RX1R II. The RX100 II offers the faster maximum aperture.
The RX1R II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the RX100 II has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the RX100 II was succeeded by the Sony RX100 III.
