Sony HX400V versus Sony A58

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V and the Sony Alpha SLT-A58 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2014 and February 2013. The HX400V is a fixed lens compact, while the Sony A58 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (HX400V) and an APS-C (Sony A58) sensor. The HX400V has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the Sony A58 provides 19.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony A58 is somewhat larger (1 percent) than the Sony HX400V. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the HX400V nor the Sony A58 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the HX400V has a lens build in, whereas the Sony A58 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

Concerning battery life, the HX400V gets 300 shots out of its NP-BX1 battery, while the Sony A58 can take 690 images on a single charge of its NP-FM500H power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The HX400V was launched at a lower price than the Sony A58, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Sony HX400V vs Sony A58

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony HX400V features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Sony A58 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the Sony A58 is 1211 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.5. The sensor in the HX400V has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the Sony A58 offers a 3:2 aspect.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Sony HX400V offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 19.8 MP of the Sony A58. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.18μm versus 4.31μm for the Sony A58). However, it should be noted that the HX400V is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the Sony A58, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the HX400V has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the HX400V provides a higher frame rate than the Sony A58. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the Sony A58 is limited to 1080/60i.

The HX400V is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Sony. In contrast, the Sony A58 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the Sony A58 was succeeded by the Sony A68.
