Sony H300 vs RX1R
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H300 and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2014 and June 2013. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The H300 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 92 percent) than the RX1R, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony H300 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Sony RX1R a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the RX1R is 2957 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.0. The sensor in the H300 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the RX1R offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 24MP, the RX1R offers a higher resolution than the H300 (19.9MP), but the RX1R nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.97μm versus 1.19μm for the H300) due to its larger sensor. However, the H300 is a somewhat more recent model (by 7 months) than the RX1R, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Sony RX1R implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the RX1R for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 30 x 20 inch or 76.2 x 50.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 24 x 16 inch or 61 x 40.6 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20 x 13.3 inch or 50.8 x 33.9 cm. The corresponding values for the Sony H300 are 25.8 x 19.3 inch or 65.4 x 49.1 cm for good quality, 20.6 x 15.5 inch or 52.3 x 39.3 cm for very good quality, and 17.2 x 12.9 inch or 43.6 x 32.7 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H300 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R are ISO 100 to ISO 25600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the RX1R provides a better video resolution than the H300. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the H300 is limited to 720/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The H300 and the RX1R are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. That said, the RX1R can be equipped with an optional viewfinder – the FDA-EV1MK. The H300 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the RX1R comes with a built-in prime. The H300 has a 25-875mm f/3.4-6.5 optic and the RX1R offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the H300 provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the RX1R. The RX1R offers the faster maximum aperture.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the H300 and the RX1R write their files to SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards.

It is notable that the H300 offers wifi support, while the RX1R does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
The H300 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Sony. In contrast, the RX1R has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the RX1R was succeeded by the Sony RX1R II.
