Sony A7S II versus Panasonic GH5s
The Sony Alpha 7S II and the Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5s are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2015 and January 2018. Both the A7S II and the GH5s are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a full frame (A7S II) and a Four Thirds (GH5s) sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 9.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GH5s is notably larger (12 percent) than the Sony A7S II. Moreover, the GH5s is markedly heavier (5 percent) than the A7S II. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GH5s was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 17 percent) than the A7S II, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Sony A7S II vs Panasonic GH5s
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony A7S II features a full frame sensor and the Panasonic GH5s a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GH5s is 73 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.0. The sensor in the A7S II has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GH5s offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 12MP, the A7S II offers a higher resolution than the GH5s (9.9MP), but the A7S II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 8.40μm versus 4.77μm for the GH5s) due to its larger sensor. However, the GH5s is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years and 3 months) than the A7S II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GH5s has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the GH5s provides a faster frame rate than the A7S II. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/60p, while the Sony is limited to 4K/30p.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Sony A7S II and the Panasonic GH5s? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Advantages of the Sony Alpha 7S II:
