Sony A7R III versus Panasonic GX7

The Sony Alpha A7R III and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in October 2017 and August 2013. Both the A7R III and the GX7 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a full frame (A7R III) and a Four Thirds (GX7) sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 42.2 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GX7 is notably smaller (28 percent) than the Sony A7R III. Moreover, the GX7 is substantially lighter (38 percent) than the A7R III. It is worth mentioning in this context that the A7R III is splash and dust resistant, while the GX7 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GX7 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 69 percent) than the A7R III, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Sony A7R III vs Panasonic GX7

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony A7R III features a full frame sensor and the Panasonic GX7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GX7 is 74 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.0. The sensor in the A7R III has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GX7 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 42.2MP, the A7R III offers a higher resolution than the GX7 (15.8MP), but the A7R III nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.52μm versus 3.77μm for the GX7) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the A7R III is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 years and 2 months) than the GX7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the A7R III has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The A7R III has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Unlike the GX7, the A7R III has the capacity to capture high quality composite images by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

A7R III versus GX7 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the A7R III provides substantially higher image quality than the GX7, with an overall score that is 30 points higher. This advantage is based on 3.4 bits higher color depth, 2.5 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.3 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the A7R III provides a higher video resolution than the GX7. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Panasonic is limited to 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The GX7 has one, while the A7R III does not. While the build-in flash of the GX7 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, both cameras feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The A7R III writes its imaging data to SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards, while the GX7 uses SDXC cards. The A7R III features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the GX7 only has one slot.

The A7R III is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Sony. In contrast, the GX7 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the GX7 was succeeded by the Panasonic GX85.

  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 248g or 38 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
