Sony A7 versus Fujifilm X100

The Sony Alpha A7 and the Fujifilm FinePix X100 are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in October 2013 and September 2010. The A7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X100 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (A7) and an APS-C (X100) sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 12.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100 is notably smaller (21 percent) than the Sony A7. It is worth mentioning in this context that the A7 is splash and dust resistant, while the X100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100 has a lens build in, whereas the A7 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the A7 gets 340 shots out of its NP-FW50 battery, while the X100 can take 300 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100 was launched at a lower price than the A7, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Sony A7 vs Fujifilm X100

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony A7 features a full frame sensor and the Fujifilm X100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X100 is 56 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Sony A7 and Fujifilm X100 sensor measures

With 24MP, the A7 offers a higher resolution than the X100 (12.2MP), but the A7 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.97μm versus 5.53μm for the X100) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the A7 is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years) than the X100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

A7 versus X100 MP

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the A7 provides substantially higher image quality than the X100, with an overall score that is 17 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.9 bits higher color depth, 1.8 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the A7 provides a higher video resolution than the X100. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 720/30p.

Both the A7 and the X100 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X100 was replaced by the Fujifilm X100S, while the A7 was followed by the Sony A7 II.

  • More compact: Is smaller (126x75mm vs 127x94mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight even though it has a lens build in (unlike the A7).
  • Easier fill-in: Has a small integrated flash to brighten shadows of backlit subjects.
  • More affordable: Was introduced at a lower price, despite coming with a build-in lens.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in September 2010).
