Sony A7 II versus Nikon D100

The Sony Alpha A7 II and the Nikon D100 are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in November 2014 and February 2002. The A7 II is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the D100 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a full frame (A7 II) and an APS-C sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 6 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D100 is considerably larger (37 percent) than the Sony A7 II. Moreover, the D100 is markedly heavier (30 percent) than the A7 II. It is worth mentioning in this context that the A7 II is splash and dust resistant, while the D100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony A7 II features a full frame sensor and the Nikon D100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D100 is 57 percent smaller. With 24MP, the A7 II offers a higher resolution than the D100 (6MP), but the A7 II has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.97μm versus 7.85μm for the D100). However, the A7 II is a somewhat more recent model (by 12 years and 9 months) than the D100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The A7 II indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the D100 does not. The highest resolution format that the A7 II can use is 1080/60p.

The A7 II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the D100 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the D100 was succeeded by the Nikon D200.
