Sony A6500 versus Canon G1 X Mark III
The Sony Alpha A6500 and the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in October 2016 and October 2017. The A6500 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the G1X Mark III is a fixed lens compact. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel.
The physical size and weight of the Sony A6500 and the Canon G1 X Mark III are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X Mark III is notably larger (12 percent) than the Sony A6500. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X Mark III has a lens build in, whereas the A6500 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G1X Mark III was launched at a lower price than the A6500, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the G1X Mark III is 10 percent smaller. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Even though the A6500 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 24 megapixel. This implies that the A6500 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 3.72μm for the G1X Mark III), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the G1X Mark III is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the A6500, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the A6500 provides a higher video resolution than the G1X Mark III. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The two cameras under review are similar with respect to both having an electronic viewfinder. However, the one in the G1X Mark III offers a slightly higher resolution than the one in the A6500 (2360k vs 2300k dots). Both the A6500 and the G1X Mark III are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The A6500 replaced the earlier Sony A6300, while the G1X Mark III followed on from the Canon G1 X Mark II.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Sony A6500 and the Sony A6500? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Sony Alpha A6500:
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).
- Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (11 vs 9 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- More flexible: Accepts interchangeable lenses, so that lens characteristics can be altered.
- More compact: Is smaller (120x67mm vs 115x78mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
- Longer lasting: Can take more shots (350 versus 200) on a single battery charge.
- Sharper images: Has hand-shake reducing image stabilization build-in.

Arguments in favor of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III:
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (1040k vs 922k dots).
