Sony A6500 versus Canon 7D II

The Sony Alpha A6500 and the Canon EOS 7D Mark II are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2016 and September 2014. The A6500 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the 7D Mark II is a DSLR. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The A6500 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 22 percent) than the 7D Mark II, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. With 24MP, the A6500 offers a higher resolution than the 7D Mark II (20MP), but the A6500 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 4.10μm for the 7D Mark II). However, the A6500 is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years) than the 7D Mark II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos.
