Sony A6300 versus Fujifilm GFX 50S

The Sony Alpha A6300 and the Fujifilm GFX 50S are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2016 and September 2016. Both the A6300 and the GFX 50S are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (A6300) and a medium format (GFX 50S) sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 51.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is considerably larger (73 percent) than the Sony A6300. Moreover, the GFX 50S is substantially heavier (83 percent) than the A6300. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The A6300 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 85 percent) than the GFX 50S, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Sony A6300 vs Fujifilm GFX 50S

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony A6300 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50S a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX 50S is 296 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 0.79. The sensor in the A6300 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX 50S offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

With 51.1MP, the GFX 50S offers a higher resolution than the A6300 (24MP), but the GFX 50S nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 3.91μm for the A6300) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 50S is a somewhat more recent model (by 7 months) than the A6300, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 50S has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the A6300 provides a higher video resolution than the GFX 50S. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the A6300 has an electronic viewfinder (2300k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The A6300 has one, while the GFX 50S does not. While the build-in flash of the A6300 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the GFX 50S features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The A6300 writes its imaging data to SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards, while the GFX 50S uses SDXC cards. The GFX 50S features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the A6300 only has one slot.

The GFX 50S is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the A6300 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the A6300 was succeeded by the Sony A6500.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
