Panasonic TZ100 versus Panasonic L10
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ100 (called Panasonic ZS100 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC- L10 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2016 and August 2007. The TZ100 is a fixed lens compact, while the L10 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an one-inch (TZ100) and a Four Thirds (L10) sensor. The TZ100 has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the L10 provides 10 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic L10 is considerably larger (80 percent) than the Panasonic TZ100. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the TZ100 nor the L10 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the TZ100 has a lens build in, whereas the L10 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Panasonic TZ100 vs Panasonic L10
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic TZ100 features an one-inch sensor and the Panasonic L10 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the L10 is 94 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.75 and 2.0. The sensor in the TZ100 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the L10 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the Panasonic TZ100 offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 10 MP of the Panasonic L10. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 4.74μm for the L10). However, it should be noted that the TZ100 is much more recent (by 8 years and 4 months) than the L10, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the TZ100 provides substantially higher image quality than the L10, with an overall score that is 15 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.5 bits higher color depth, 1.7 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.4 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The TZ100 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the L10 does not. The highest resolution format that the TZ100 can use is 4K/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the TZ100 has an electronic viewfinder (1166k dots), while the L10 has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the TZ100 and the L10 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The TZ100 was replaced by the Panasonic TZ200, while the L10 does not have a direct successor.

Advantages of the Panasonic Lumix DMC- L10:
- Brighter framing: Features an optical viewfinder for clear, lag-free composition.
- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.
- More flexible: Makes it possible to change lenses and thus to use specialty optics.
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (450 versus 300) out of a single battery charge.
- More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in August 2007).
If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the TZ100 is the clear winner of the match-up (16 : 6 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the TZ100 or the L10. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
