Panasonic LX15 versus Panasonic G7
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX15 (called Panasonic LX10 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2016 and May 2015. The LX15 is a fixed lens compact, while the G7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an one-inch (LX15) and a Four Thirds sensor. The LX15 has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the G7 provides 15.8 MP.
The physical size and weight of the Panasonic LX15 and the Panasonic G7 are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are presented. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G7 is considerably larger (69 percent) than the Panasonic LX15. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the LX15 nor the G7 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the LX15 has a lens build in, whereas the G7 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic LX15 features an one-inch sensor and the Panasonic G7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G7 is 94 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 2.0. The sensor in the LX15 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G7 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the Panasonic LX15 offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 15.8 MP of the Panasonic G7. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 3.77μm for the G7). However, it should be noted that the LX15 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 4 months) than the G7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the G7 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the LX15 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. The LX15 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the G7 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the G7 was succeeded by the Panasonic G85.
So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Panasonic LX15 and the Panasonic LX15? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.
Advantages of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX15:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (20 vs 15.8MP) with a 15% higher linear resolution.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (10 vs 7 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- Ready to shoot: Has a lens build-in, whereas the G7 requires a separate lens.
- More compact: Is smaller (106x60mm vs 125x86mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.

- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- More flexible: Takes interchangeable lenses and can thus be used with specialty optics.
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (350 versus 260) out of a single battery charge.
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in May 2015).
If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the LX15 comes out slightly ahead of the G7 (7 : 6 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the LX15 or the G7. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is where reviews by experts come in. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
