The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 (called Panasonic LX15 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2016 and July 2010. Both the LX10 and the LX5 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an one-inch (LX10) and a 1/1.7-inch (LX5) sensor. The LX10 has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the LX5 provides 10 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX5 is notably larger (12 percent) than the Panasonic LX10. However, the LX5 is markedly lighter (13 percent) than the LX10. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the LX10 nor the LX5 are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the LX10 gets 260 shots out of its DMW-BLH7 battery, while the LX5 can take 400 images on a single charge of its DMW-BCJ13 power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The LX5 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 29 percent) than the LX10, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic LX10 vs Panasonic LX5

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic LX10 features an one-inch sensor and the Panasonic LX5 a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The sensor area in the LX5 is 60 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 4.4. The sensor in the LX10 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the LX5 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 20MP, the LX10 offers a higher resolution than the LX5 (10MP), but the LX10 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 2.14μm for the LX5) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the LX10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 6 years and 2 months) than the LX5, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the LX10 provides a higher video resolution than the LX5. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the LX5 is limited to 720/60p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The LX10 and the LX5 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the LX10 features an electronic shutter, which makes silent shooting and higher burst speeds possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the LX10 and the LX5 have zoom lenses build in. The LX10 has a 24-72mm f/1.4-2.8 optic and the LX5 offers a 24-90mm f/2.0-3.3 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the LX10 and LX5 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the LX5 has more tele-photo reach at the long end. The LX10 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The LX10 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the LX5 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the LX5 was succeeded by the Panasonic LX7.

So what is the bottom line? Which of the two cameras – the Panasonic LX10 or the Panasonic LX5 – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (20 vs 10MP) with a 44% higher linear resolution.

Advantages of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5:

  • More framing options: Can be equipped with a hotshoe-mounted accessory-viewfinder.
  • More tele-reach: Has a longer tele-lens for perspective compression and subject magnification.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 39g or 13 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (400 versus 260) out of a single battery charge.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (29 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in July 2010).

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the LX10 is the clear winner of the match-up (11 : 6 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the LX10 and the LX5 in practical situations. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate.
