Panasonic LX10 versus Canon G9 X Mark II
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 (called Panasonic LX15 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2016 and January 2017. Both the LX10 and the G9X Mark II are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an one-inch sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 20 megapixel.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G9X Mark II was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 24 percent) than the LX10, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an one-inch sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 2.7. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 20 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the LX10 and the G9X Mark II have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the G9X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 months) than the LX10, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the LX10 provides a higher video resolution than the G9X Mark II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The LX10 and the G9X Mark II are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. Both the LX10 and the G9X Mark II have zoom lenses build in. The LX10 has a 24-72mm f/1.4-2.8 optic and the G9X Mark II offers a 28-84mm f/2.0-4.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Panasonic provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the Canon, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The LX10 offers the faster maximum aperture.

So what is the bottom line? Is there a clear favorite between the Panasonic LX10 and the Panasonic LX10? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10:
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).
- More flexible LCD: Has a tilting screen for odd-angle shots in landscape orientation.
- Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (10 vs 8.2 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.

Advantages of the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II:
- More tele-reach: Has a longer tele-lens for perspective compression and subject magnification.
- More compact: Is smaller (98x58mm vs 106x60mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 104g or 34 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- More affordable: Was released into a lower priced segment (24 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (3 months) more recently.

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the LX10 or the G9X Mark II.
