Panasonic L1 versus Panasonic FZ2500
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500 (labelled Panasonic FZ2000 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in February 2006 and September 2016. The L1 is a DSLR, while the FZ2500 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (L1) and an one-inch (FZ2500) sensor. The L1 has a resolution of 7.4 megapixel, whereas the FZ2500 provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic FZ2500 is notably larger (11 percent) than the Panasonic L1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the L1 nor the FZ2500 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the FZ2500 has a lens build in, whereas the L1 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Panasonic L1 vs Panasonic FZ2500
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic L1 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Panasonic FZ2500 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the FZ2500 is 48 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 2.7. The sensor in the L1 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the FZ2500 offers a 3:2 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the FZ2500 offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 7.4 MP of the L1. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 5.51μm for the L1). However, it should be noted that the FZ2500 is much more recent (by 10 years and 6 months) than the L1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The FZ2500 indeed provides for movie recording, while the L1 does not. The highest resolution format that the FZ2500 can use is 4K/30p.

The FZ2500 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the L1 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the L1 was succeeded by the Panasonic L10.
