Panasonic GX9 versus Fujifilm X100T

The Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 and the Fujifilm X100T are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2018 and September 2014. The GX9 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X100T is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (GX9) and an APS-C (X100T) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 16 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100T is notably larger (5 percent) than the Panasonic GX9. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the GX9 nor the X100T are weather-sealed.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic GX9 vs Fujifilm X100T

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic GX9 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Fujifilm X100T an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X100T is 64 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.5. The sensor in the GX9 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X100T offers a 3:2 aspect.

Panasonic GX9 and Fujifilm X100T sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Panasonic GX9 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 16 MP of the Fujifilm X100T. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 4.80μm for the X100T). However, it should be noted that the GX9 is much more recent (by 3 years and 5 months) than the X100T, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

The X100T has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the GX9 provides a higher video resolution than the X100T. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The GX9 has a touchscreen, while the X100T has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the GX9 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the GX9 and the X100T write their imaging data to SDXC cards.

The GX9 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Panasonic. In contrast, the X100T has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100T was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100F.
