Panasonic GX850 versus Fujifilm X-A3

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX850 (called Panasonic GX800 in some regions) and the Fujifilm X-A3 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2017 and August 2016. Both the GX850 and the X-A3 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a Four Thirds (GX850) and an APS-C (X-A3) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 15.8 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-A3 is notably larger (13 percent) than the Panasonic GX850. Moreover, the X-A3 is markedly heavier (26 percent) than the GX850. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the GX850 nor the X-A3 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X-A3 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 27 percent) than the GX850, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic GX850 vs Fujifilm X-A3

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic GX850 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Fujifilm X-A3 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X-A3 is 64 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.5. The sensor in the GX850 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X-A3 offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 24MP, the X-A3 offers a higher resolution than the GX850 (15.8MP), but the X-A3 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 3.77μm for the GX850) due to its larger sensor. However, the GX850 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 months) than the X-A3, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GX850 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the GX850 provides a higher video resolution than the X-A3. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the GX850 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the GX850 and the X-A3 write their imaging data to SDXC cards.
