Panasonic GX850 versus Canon M100

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX850 (called Panasonic GX800 in some regions) and the Canon EOS M100 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2017 and August 2017. Both the GX850 and the M100 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a Four Thirds (GX850) and an APS-C (M100) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 15.8 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M100 is somewhat larger (4 percent) than the Panasonic GX850. Moreover, the M100 is markedly heavier (12 percent) than the GX850. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the GX850 nor the M100 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The M100 was somewhat cheaper (by 9 percent) than the GX850 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.


Sensor comparison: Panasonic GX850 vs Canon M100

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic GX850 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon M100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the M100 is 48 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.6. The sensor in the GX850 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the M100 offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 24MP, the M100 offers a higher resolution than the GX850 (15.8MP), but the M100 has marginally smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 3.77μm for the GX850). Yet, the M100 is a somewhat more recent model (by 7 months) than the GX850, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GX850 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the M100 has a markedly higher DXO score than the GX850 (overall score 5 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.3 bits higher color depth, 0.4 EV of lower dynamic range, and 1.1 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the GX850 provides a higher video resolution than the M100. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
