The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The GX7 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the 6D Mark II, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic GX7 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon 6D Mark II a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the 6D Mark II is 283 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.0. The sensor in the GX7 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the 6D Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 26MP, the 6D Mark II offers a higher resolution than the GX7 (15.8MP), but the 6D Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.76μm versus 3.77μm for the GX7) due to its larger sensor. The 6D Mark II has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 125 to ISO 25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS 6D Mark II are ISO 100 to ISO 40000, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The GX7 has one, while the 6D Mark II does not. While the built-in flash of the GX7 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one.
