Panasonic G9 versus Canon 5D Mark III

The Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 and the Canon EOS 5D Mark III are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in November 2017 and March 2012. The G9 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the 5D Mark III is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (G9) and a full frame (5D Mark III) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 22.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 5D Mark III is notably larger (33 percent) than the Panasonic G9. Moreover, the 5D Mark III is substantially heavier (44 percent) than the G9. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The G9 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 51 percent) than the 5D Mark III, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic G9 vs Canon 5D Mark III

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic G9 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon 5D Mark III a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the 5D Mark III is 284 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.0. The sensor in the G9 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the 5D Mark III offers a 3:2 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Panasonic G9 and Canon 5D Mark III sensor measures

With 22.1MP, the 5D Mark III offers a higher resolution than the G9 (20.2MP), but the 5D Mark III nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.25μm versus 3.34μm for the G9) due to its larger sensor. However, the G9 is a much more recent model (by 5 years and 8 months) than the 5D Mark III, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the G9 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Unlike the 5D Mark III, the G9 has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (80.6MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the G9 provides a higher video resolution than the 5D Mark III. It can shoot video footage at 4K/60p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the G9 features an electronic shutter, which makes silent shooting and higher burst speeds possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The G9 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 5D Mark III has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 5D Mark III was succeeded by the Canon 5D Mark IV.
