Panasonic FZ330 versus Panasonic FZ2000

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ330 (called Panasonic FZ300 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2000 (labelled Panasonic FZ2500 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2015 and September 2016. Both the FZ330 and the FZ2000 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (FZ330) and an one-inch (FZ2000) sensor. The FZ330 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the FZ2000 provides 20 MP. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The FZ330 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the FZ2000, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ330 vs Panasonic FZ2000

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ330 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Panasonic FZ2000 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the FZ2000 is 314 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.7. The sensor in the FZ330 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the FZ2000 offers a 3:2 aspect.

Panasonic FZ330 and Panasonic FZ2000 sensor measures

With 20MP, the FZ2000 offers a higher resolution than the FZ330 (12MP), but the FZ2000 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ330) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the FZ2000 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 2 months) than the FZ330, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ330 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Both the FZ330 and the FZ2000 have zoom lenses build in. The FZ330 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the FZ2000 offers a 24-480mm f/2.8-4.5 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the FZ2000 provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the FZ330, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

Both the FZ330 and the FZ2000 are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The FZ330 replaced the earlier Panasonic FZ200, while the FZ2000 followed on from the Panasonic FZ1000.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the FZ330 comes out slightly ahead of the FZ2000 (7 : 6 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

FZ330 07:06 FZ2000

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the FZ330 or the FZ2000. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. This is where reviews by experts come in. The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
