Panasonic FZ330 versus Canon G7 X Mark II
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ330 (called Panasonic FZ300 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in July 2015 and February 2016. Both the FZ330 and the G7X Mark II are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on (FZ330) and an one-inch sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G7 X Mark II is considerably smaller (47 percent) than the Panasonic FZ330. Moreover, the G7X Mark II is substantially lighter (54 percent) than the FZ330. It is worth mentioning in this context that the FZ330 is splash and dust resistant, while the G7X Mark II does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The FZ330 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 14 percent) than the G7X Mark II, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ330 features sensor and the Canon G7 X Mark II an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G7X Mark II is 314 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.7. The sensor in the FZ330 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the G7X Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 20MP, the G7X Mark II offers a higher resolution than the FZ330 (12MP), but the G7X Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ330) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the G7X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 7 months) than the FZ330, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ330 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the FZ330 provides a higher video resolution than the G7X Mark II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the FZ330 has an electronic viewfinder (1440k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the G7X Mark II relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Both the FZ330 and the G7X Mark II have zoom lenses build in. The FZ330 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the G7X Mark II offers a 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the Panasonic, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The G7X Mark II offers the faster maximum aperture.

So what is the bottom line? Is there a clear favorite between the Panasonic FZ330 and the Panasonic FZ330? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Arguments in favor of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ330:
- Maximized detail: Lacks an anti-alias filter to exploit the sensor's full resolution potential.

Reasons to prefer the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II:

- Better image quality: Is equipped with a larger and more technologically advanced sensor.

- More compact: Is smaller (106x61mm vs 132x92mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.

However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
