Panasonic FZ300 versus Canon G9 X

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 (called Panasonic FZ330 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G9 X are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in July 2015 and October 2015. Both the FZ300 and the G9X are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (FZ300) and an one-inch (G9X) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G9 X is considerably smaller (53 percent) than the Panasonic FZ300. Moreover, the G9X is substantially lighter (70 percent) than the FZ300. It is worth mentioning in this context that the FZ300 is splash and dust resistant, while the G9X does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Concerning battery life, the FZ300 gets 380 shots out of its DMW-BLC12 battery, while the G9X can take 220 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G9X was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 12 percent) than the FZ300, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ300 vs Canon G9 X

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ300 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Canon G9 X an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G9X is 314 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.7. The sensor in the FZ300 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the G9X offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 20MP, the G9X offers a higher resolution than the FZ300 (12MP), but the G9X nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ300) due to its larger sensor. It is noteworthy in this context that the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ300 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

FZ300 versus G9X MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the G9X offers substantially better image quality than the FZ300 (overall score 25 points higher). The advantage is based on 2.2 bits higher color depth, 1.3 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.4 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the FZ300 provides a higher video resolution than the G9X. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

Both the FZ300 and the G9X have zoom lenses build in. The FZ300 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the G9X offers a 28-84mm f/2.0-4.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Panasonic provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Canon. The G9X offers the faster maximum aperture.

The FZ300 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the G9X has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the G9X was succeeded by the Canon G9 X Mark II.

  • Better low-light sensitivity: Can shoot in dim conditions (2.4 stops ISO advantage).

  • More compact: Is smaller (98x58mm vs 132x92mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
