Panasonic FZ300 versus Canon G1 X Mark III
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 (called Panasonic FZ330 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in July 2015 and October 2017. Both the FZ300 and the G1X Mark III are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (FZ300) and an APS-C (G1X Mark III) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X Mark III is notably smaller (26 percent) than the Panasonic FZ300. Moreover, the G1X Mark III is substantially lighter (42 percent) than the FZ300. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The FZ300 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 54 percent) than the G1X Mark III, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ300 vs Canon G1 X Mark III
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ300 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Canon G1 X Mark III an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the G1X Mark III is 1086 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.5. The sensor in the FZ300 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the G1X Mark III offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 24MP, the G1X Mark III offers a higher resolution than the FZ300 (12MP), but the G1X Mark III nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ300) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the G1X Mark III is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 3 months) than the FZ300, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ300 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the FZ300 provides a higher video resolution than the G1X Mark III. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

Both the FZ300 and the G1X Mark III have zoom lenses build in. The FZ300 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the G1X Mark III offers a 24-72mm f/2.8-5.6 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the Panasonic, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Panasonic FZ300 or the Canon G1 X Mark III – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Arguments in favor of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300:
- Maximized detail: Lacks an anti-alias filter to exploit the sensor's full resolution potential.
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).
- Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.

- More modern: Reflects 2 years and 3 months of technical progress since the FZ300 launch.
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the match-up finishes in a tie (8 points each). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the FZ300 or the G1X Mark III handle or perform in practice. The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
