Panasonic FZ200 versus Panasonic FZ2000

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2000 (labelled Panasonic FZ2500 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in July 2012 and September 2016. Both the FZ200 and the FZ2000 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (FZ200) and an one-inch (FZ2000) sensor. The FZ200 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the FZ2000 provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic FZ2000 is notably larger (29 percent) than the Panasonic FZ200. Moreover, the FZ2000 is substantially heavier (56 percent) than the FZ200. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the FZ200 nor the FZ2000 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The FZ200 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the FZ2000, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ200 vs Panasonic FZ2000

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ200 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Panasonic FZ2000 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the FZ2000 is 314 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.7. The sensor in the FZ200 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the FZ2000 offers a 3:2 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around BSI-CMOS sensors.

With 20MP, the FZ2000 offers a higher resolution than the FZ200 (12MP), but the FZ2000 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ200) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the FZ2000 is a much more recent model (by 4 years and 2 months) than the FZ200, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ200 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the FZ2000 provides a better video resolution than the FZ200. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the FZ200 is limited to 1080/60p.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the FZ2000 features an electronic shutter, which makes silent shooting and higher burst speeds possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the FZ200 and the FZ2000 have zoom lenses build in. The FZ200 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the FZ2000 offers a 24-480mm f/2.8-4.5 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the FZ2000 provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the FZ200, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

The FZ2000 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the FZ200 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the FZ200 was succeeded by the Panasonic FZ300.

So how do things add up? Is the Panasonic FZ200 better than the Panasonic FZ2000 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Advantages of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200:

  • Maximized detail: Lacks an anti-alias filter to exploit the sensor's full resolution potential.
  • More tele-reach: Has a longer tele-lens for perspective compression and subject magnification.
  • More compact: Is smaller (125x87mm vs 138x102mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the FZ200 or the FZ2000.
