Olympus PEN-F versus Canon G5 X
The Olympus PEN-F and the Canon PowerShot G5 X are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2016 and October 2015. The PEN-F is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the G5X is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (PEN-F) and an one-inch (G5X) sensor. The Olympus has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP. Body comparison: Olympus PEN-F vs Canon G5 X
The physical size and weight of the Olympus PEN-F and the Canon G5 X are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are presented. All width, height and depth dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G5 X is notably smaller (5 percent) than the Olympus PEN-F. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the PEN-F nor the G5X are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G5X has a lens build in, whereas the PEN-F is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G5X was launched at a lower price than the PEN-F, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Olympus PEN-F vs Canon G5 X
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Olympus PEN-F features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon G5 X an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G5X is 48 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 2.7. The sensor in the PEN-F has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the G5X offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 20.2MP, the PEN-F offers a slightly higher resolution than the G5X (20MP), but the PEN-F nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 2.41μm for the G5X) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the PEN-F is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 months) than the G5X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the PEN-F has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
Unlike the G5X, the PEN-F has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (40MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Olympus PEN-F or the Canon G5 X – has the upper hand? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Arguments in favor of the Olympus PEN-F:
