Olympus E-M10 IV vs Panasonic GH5
The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV and the Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in August 2020 and January 2017. Both the E-M10 IV and the GH5 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with a Four Thirds sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 20.2 megapixels.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The E-M10 IV was launched at a markedly lower price (by 65 percent) than the GH5, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 20.2 megapixels. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the E-M10 IV and the GH5 have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the E-M10 IV is much more recent (by 3 years and 7 months) than the GH5, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 25600, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 offers exactly the same ISO settings.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the GH5 provides a faster frame rate than the E-M10 IV. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The E-M10 IV has one, while the GH5 does not. While the built-in flash of the E-M10 IV is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.Both cameras have an articulated rear screen that can be turned to be front-facing. The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. It is notable that the GH5 has a headphone jack, which makes it possible to attach external headphones and monitor the quality of sound during the recording process. The E-M10 IV lacks such a headphone port.
