The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Olympus E-510 vs Nikon D5300

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Olympus E-510 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Nikon D5300 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D5300 is 63 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.5. The sensor in the E-510 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the D5300 offers a 3:2 aspect.

Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the D5300 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the D5300 offers substantially better image quality than the E-510 (overall score 31 points higher). The advantage is based on 2.8 bits higher color depth, 3.9 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The D5300 indeed provides for movie recording, while the E-510 does not. The highest resolution format that the D5300 can use is 1080/60p.

One feature that differentiates the E-510 and the D5300 is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The E-510 reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the D5300 has to rely on optical image stabilization in OIS-equipped lenses to achieve the same effect.

The D5300 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the E-510 does not have a selfie-screen.

The E-510 writes its imaging data to Compact Flash or xD Picture cards, while the D5300 uses SDXC cards. The E-510 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the D5300 only has one slot.

It is notable that the D5300 offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the E-510 does not offer wifi capability.

Both the E-510 and the D5300 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The E-510 was replaced by the Olympus E-520, while the D5300 was followed by the Nikon D5500.
