However, the D200 is markedly heavier (5 percent) than the E-3. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
Sensor comparison: Olympus E-3 vs Nikon D200
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Olympus E-3 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Nikon D200 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D200 is 66 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.5. The sensor in the E-3 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the D200 offers a 3:2 aspect.
Even though the D200 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 10 megapixels. This implies that the D200 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 6.11μm versus 4.74μm for the E-3), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the E-3 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 11 months) than the D200, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.
The Olympus E-3 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200 The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon D200 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200..
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the D200 has a markedly higher DXO score than the E-3 (overall score 8 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.7 bits higher color depth, 1 EV in additional dynamic range, and -0 stops in additional low light sensitivity. One feature that differentiates the E-3 and the D200 is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The E-3 reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the D200 has to rely on optical image stabilization in OIS-equipped lenses to achieve the same effect.The E-3 has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in snapping selfies. In contrast, the D200 does not have a selfie-screen.
The E-3 writes its imaging data to Compact Flash or xD Picture cards, while the D200 uses Compact Flash cards. The E-3 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the D200 only has one slot.

Both the E-3 and the D200 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The D200 was replaced by the Nikon D300, while the E-3 was followed by the Olympus E-5.
