Nikon Z7 versus Olympus E-500

The Nikon Z7 and the Olympus Evolt E-500 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2018 and September 2005. The Z7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the E-500 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a full frame (Z7) and a Four Thirds (E-500) sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 45.4 megapixel, whereas the Olympus provides 8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-500 is notably smaller (9 percent) than the Nikon Z7. Moreover, the E-500 is markedly lighter (29 percent) than the Z7. It is worth mentioning in this context that the Z7 is splash and dust resistant, while the E-500 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Concerning battery life, the Z7 gets 330 shots out of its EN-EL15b battery, while the E-500 can take 750 images on a single charge of its BLM-1 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The E-500 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 82 percent) than the Z7, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon Z7 vs Olympus E-500

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon Z7 features a full frame sensor and the Olympus E-500 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-500 is 74 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.0. The sensor in the Z7 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-500 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 45.4MP, the Z7 offers a higher resolution than the E-500 (8MP), but the Z7 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.35μm versus 5.30μm for the E-500). However, the Z7 is a somewhat more recent model (by 12 years and 10 months) than the E-500, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the Z7 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Z7 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Z7 versus E-500 MP

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The Z7 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the E-500 does not. The highest resolution format that the Z7 can use is 4K/30p.

One feature that is present on the Z7, but is missing on the E-500 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The Z7 writes its imaging data to XQD cards, while the E-500 uses Compact Flash or xD Picture cards. The E-500 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the Z7 only has one slot.

The Z7 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the E-500 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the E-500 was succeeded by the Olympus E-510.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age.
