Nikon P1000 versus Olympus E-M10 II

The Nikon Coolpix P1000 and the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2018 and August 2015. The P1000 is a fixed lens compact, while the E-M10 II is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (P1000) and a Four Thirds (E-M10 II) sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 15.9 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-M10 II is considerably smaller (43 percent) than the Nikon P1000. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the P1000 nor the E-M10 II are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the P1000 has a lens build in, whereas the E-M10 II is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon P1000 vs Olympus E-M10 II

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon P1000 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Olympus E-M10 II a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-M10 II is 704 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

Even though the E-M10 II has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 15.9 megapixel. This implies that the E-M10 II has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 1.33μm for the P1000), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the P1000 is much more recent (by 2 years and 10 months) than the E-M10 II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the P1000 provides a higher video resolution than the E-M10 II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Olympus is limited to 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The E-M10 II has a touchscreen, while the P1000 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The P1000 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the E-M10 II has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the E-M10 II was succeeded by the Olympus E-M10 III.
