Nikon Df vs Sony HX95
The Nikon Df and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX95 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in November 2013 and August 2018. The Df is a DSLR, while the HX95 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (Df) and a 1/2.3-inch (HX95) sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 16.2 megapixels, whereas the Sony provides 18 MP.

The Df can be obtained in two different colors (black, silver), while the HX95 is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony HX95 is considerably smaller (63 percent) than the Nikon Df. It is worth mentioning in this context that the Df is splash and dust resistant, while the HX95 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The HX95 was launched at a lower price than the Df, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon Df features a full frame sensor and the Sony HX95 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the HX95 is 97 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 5.6. The sensor in the Df has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the HX95 offers a 4:3 aspect.
In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the HX95 offers a higher resolution of 18 megapixels, compared with 16.2 MP of the Df. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.25μm versus 7.29μm for the Df). However, it should be noted that the HX95 is much more recent (by 4 years and 9 months) than the Df, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the HX95 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Nikon Df has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX95 are ISO 80 to ISO 3200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 80-6400.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The HX95 indeed provides for movie recording, while the Df does not. The highest resolution format that the HX95 can use is 4K/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the HX95 has an electronic viewfinder (638k dots), while the Df has an optical one.
