Nikon D800E versus Nikon D700

The Nikon D800E and the Nikon D700 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in February 2012 and July 2008. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with a full frame sensor. The D800 has a resolution of 36.2 megapixel, whereas the D700 provides 12.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D800E and the Nikon D700 are of equal size. However, the D700 is markedly heavier (7 percent) than the D800. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Concerning battery life, the D800 gets 900 shots out of its EN-EL15 battery, while the D700 can take 1000 images on a single charge of its EN-EL3e power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The D700 was somewhat cheaper (by 9 percent) than the D800 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D800E vs Nikon D700

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature a full frame sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.0 (D800) and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the D800 uses a more advanced image processing engine (EXPEED 3) than the D700 (EXPEED), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 36.2MP, the D800 offers a higher resolution than the D700 (12.1MP), but the D800 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.88μm versus 8.43μm for the D700). However, the D800 is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years and 7 months) than the D700, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the D800 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

D800 versus D700 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under review, the D800 provides substantially higher image quality than the D700, with an overall score that is 16 points higher. This advantage is based on 2.1 bits higher color depth, 2.1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.4 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The D800 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the D700 does not. The highest resolution format that the D800 can use is 1080/30p.

The D800 writes its imaging data to Compact Flash or SDXC cards, while the D700 uses Compact Flash cards. The D800 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the D700 only has one slot.

Both the D800 and the D700 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The D700 was replaced by the Nikon D800, while the D800 was followed by the Nikon D810.
