Nikon D750 versus Fujifilm GFX 50S
The Nikon D750 and the Fujifilm GFX 50S are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and September 2016. The D750 is a DSLR, while the GFX is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (D750) and a medium format (GFX) sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 24.2 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 51.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is notably smaller (13 percent) than the Nikon D750. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The D750 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 65 percent) than the GFX, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Nikon D750 vs Fujifilm GFX 50S
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D750 features a full frame sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50S a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX is 68 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 0.79. The sensor in the D750 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 51.1MP, the GFX offers a higher resolution than the D750 (24.2MP), but the GFX has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 5.97μm for the D750). Yet, the GFX is a much more recent model (by 2 years) than the D750, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the D750 provides a higher frame rate than the GFX. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/30p.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Nikon D750 better than the Fujifilm GFX 50S or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Advantages of the Nikon D750:

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
