Nikon D5300 versus Canon 7D II

The Nikon D5300 and the Canon EOS 7D Mark II are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2013 and September 2014. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 7D II is notably larger (36 percent) than the Nikon D5300. Moreover, the 7D Mark II is substantially heavier (90 percent) than the D5300. It is noteworthy in this context that the 7D Mark II is splash and dust-proof, while the D5300 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The D5300 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 56 percent) than the 7D Mark II, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D5300 vs Canon 7D II

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 7D Mark II is 8 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.5 (D5300) and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Nikon D5300 and Canon 7D II sensor measures

With 24MP, the D5300 offers a higher resolution than the 7D Mark II (20MP), but the D5300 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 4.10μm for the 7D Mark II). Moreover, the 7D Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 10 months) than the D5300, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the D5300 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

D5300 versus 7D Mark II MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under review, the D5300 provides substantially higher image quality than the 7D Mark II, with an overall score that is 13 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.6 bits higher color depth, 2.1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.3 stops in additional low light sensitivity. The 7D Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the D5300 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the D5300 was succeeded by the Nikon D5500.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
