Nikon D500 versus Canon SX60

The Nikon D500 and the Canon PowerShot SX60 HS are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2016 and September 2014. The D500 is a DSLR, while the SX60 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (D500) and a 1/2.3-inch (SX60) sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 20.7 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 14.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon SX60 is notably smaller (30 percent) than the Nikon D500. It is worth mentioning in this context that the D500 is splash and dust resistant, while the SX60 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX60 has a lens build in, whereas the D500 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The SX60 was launched at a lower price than the D500, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D500 vs Canon SX60

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D500 features an APS-C sensor and the Canon SX60 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the SX60 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 5.6. The sensor in the D500 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the SX60 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 20.7MP, the D500 offers a higher resolution than the SX60 (14.2MP), but the D500 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.22μm versus 1.40μm for the SX60) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the D500 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 3 months) than the SX60, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

D500 versus SX60 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the D500 provides substantially higher image quality than the SX60, with an overall score that is 44 points higher. This advantage is based on 4.8 bits higher color depth, 3.2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 3.4 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the D500 provides a higher video resolution than the SX60. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

One feature that is present on the D500, but is missing on the SX60 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The D500 writes its imaging data to SDHC or XQD cards, while the SX60 uses SDXC cards. The D500 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the SX60 only has one slot.

The D500 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the SX60 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the SX60 was succeeded by the Canon SX70.
