Nikon D3S versus Canon 1D C

The Nikon D3S and the Canon EOS-1D C are two professional cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in October 2009 and April 2012. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with a full frame sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 12.1 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 17.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1D C is somewhat larger (3 percent) than the Nikon D3S. Moreover, the 1DC is markedly heavier (25 percent) than the D3S. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Yet, since both cameras are based around a full frame sensor, their respective lenses will tend to have similar dimensions and heft. Concerning battery life, the D3S gets 4200 shots out of its EN-EL4a battery, while the 1DC can take 1120 images on a single charge of its LP-E4N power pack. As can be seen in the images above, both cameras have a battery grip build in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The D3S was launched at a markedly lower price (by 65 percent) than the 1DC, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D3S vs Canon 1D C

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature a full frame sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Nikon D3S and Canon 1D C sensor measures

With 17.9MP, the 1DC offers a higher resolution than the D3S (12.1MP), but the 1DC has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.95μm versus 8.43μm for the D3S). Yet, the 1DC is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 5 months) than the D3S, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 1DC provides a better video resolution than the D3S. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/24p, while the Nikon is limited to 720/24p.

Both the D3S and the 1DC have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The D3S was replaced by the Nikon D4, while the 1DC does not have a direct successor.

Advantages of the Nikon D3S:

  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (4200 versus 1120) on a single battery charge.

However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
