Nikon D2X versus Nikon D200
The Nikon D2X and the Nikon D200 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2004 and November 2005. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The D2X has a resolution of 12.2 megapixel, whereas the D200 provides 10 MP. Body comparison: Nikon D2X vs Nikon D200
The physical size and weight of the Nikon D2X and the Nikon D200 are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D200 is considerably smaller (30 percent) than the Nikon D2X. Moreover, the D200 is markedly lighter (27 percent) than the D2X. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The D200 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 66 percent) than the D2X, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Nikon D2X vs Nikon D200
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Despite having a slightly smaller sensor, the Nikon D2X offers a higher resolution of 12.2 megapixel, compared with 10 MP of the Nikon D200. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 5.52μm versus 6.11μm for the D200). Moreover, it should be noted that the D200 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 1 month) than the D2X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the D200 has a markedly higher DXO score than the D2X (overall score 5 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.2 bits higher color depth, 0.6 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.3 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Both the D2X and the D200 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The D2X was replaced by the Nikon D2Xs, while the D200 was followed by the Nikon D300.
Review summary: Nikon D2X vs Nikon D200
So what is the bottom line? Is the Nikon D2X better than the Nikon D200 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Arguments in favor of the Nikon D2X:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (12.2 vs 10MP) with a 10% higher linear resolution.
- Longer lasting: Can take more shots (3800 versus 400) on a single battery charge.
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in September 2004).
Reasons to prefer the Nikon D200:
- Better image quality: Scores markedly higher (5 points) in the DXO overall evaluation.
- More dynamic range: Captures a broader range of light and dark details (0.6 EV of extra DR).
- More compact: Is smaller (147x113mm vs 158x150mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 332g or 27 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
- Easier fill-in: Has a small integrated flash to brighten shadows of backlit subjects.
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (66 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (1 year and 1 month) more recently.

However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
