Nikon D100 versus Canon 10D
The Nikon D100 and the Canon EOS 10D are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2002 and February 2003. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 6 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 6.3 MP.
The physical size and weight of the Nikon D100 and the Canon 10D are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are presented. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 10D is somewhat smaller (4 percent) than the Nikon D100. However, the 10D is markedly heavier (9 percent) than the D100. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the D100 nor the 10D are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Yet, since both cameras are based around an APS-C sensor, their respective lenses will tend to have similar dimensions and heft. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 10D is 7 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.5 (D100) and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the 10D offers a slightly higher resolution of 6.3 megapixel, compared with 6 MP of the D100. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 7.38μm versus 7.85μm for the D100). However, it should be noted that the 10D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the D100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The D100 and the 10D are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. Both the D100 and the 10D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The D100 was replaced by the Nikon D200, while the 10D was followed by the Canon 20D.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Nikon D100 or the Canon 10D – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Nikon D100:
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in February 2002).
Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS 10D:
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (500 versus 370) out of a single battery charge.
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (1 year) more recently.
If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 10D comes out slightly ahead of the D100 (2 : 1 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the D100 or the 10D. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
