Leica X2 versus Leica X Typ 113

The Leica X2 and the Leica X (Typ 113) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in May 2012 and September 2014. Both the X2 and the X Typ 113 are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 16.1 megapixel. Moreover, the X Typ 113 is substantially heavier (41 percent) than the X2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X2 nor the X Typ 113 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X2 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 13 percent) than the X Typ 113, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 16.1 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the X2 and the X Typ 113 have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the X Typ 113 is much more recent (by 2 years and 4 months) than the X2, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X Typ 113 indeed provides for movie recording, while the X2 does not. The highest resolution format that the X Typ 113 can use is 1080/30p.

Both the X2 and the X Typ 113 have build-in prime lenses. The X2 has a 36mm f/2.8 optic and the X Typ 113 offers a 35mm f/1.7 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X2 provides more tele-photo reach than the X Typ 113. The X Typ 113 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The X Typ 113 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X2 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the X2 from Leica.

So how do things add up? Is the Leica X2 better than the Leica X Typ 113 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Advantages of the Leica X2:

  • More compact: Is smaller (124x69mm vs 133x73mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 141g or 29 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (450 versus 350) on a single battery charge.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced segment (13 percent cheaper at launch).

  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (920k vs 230k dots).
  • Better light gathering: Has a lens with a wider maximum aperture (f/1.7 vs f/2.8).
  • Wider view: Has a wider-angle lens that facilitates landscape or interior shots.
  • More modern: Reflects 2 years and 4 months of technical progress since the X2 launch.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the X Typ 113 comes out slightly ahead of the X2 (6 : 5 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
