The Leica X1 and the Leica X Vario (Typ 107) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2009 and June 2013. Both the X1 and the X Vario are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X1 has a resolution of 12.2 megapixels, whereas the X Vario provides 16.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica X Vario is notably larger (30 percent) than the Leica X1. Moreover, the X Vario is substantially heavier (122 percent) than the X1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X1 nor the X Vario are weather-sealed.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 30 percent) than the X Vario, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica X1 vs X Vario

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Leica X1 and Leica X Vario sensor measures

With 16.1MP, the X Vario offers a higher resolution than the X1 (12.2MP), but the X Vario has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 5.51μm for the X1). Yet, the X Vario is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 9 months) than the X1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The Leica X1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200 The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica X Vario (Typ 107) are ISO 100 to ISO 12500 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X Vario indeed provides for movie recording, while the X1 does not. The highest resolution format that the X Vario can use is 1080/30p.

The X Vario is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X1 comes with a built-in prime. The X Vario has a 28-70mm f/3.5-6.4 optic and the X1 offers a 36mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X Vario provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the X1. The X1 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The X1 writes its imaging data to SDHC cards, while the X Vario uses SDXC cards.

The X Vario is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Leica. In contrast, the X1 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X1 was succeeded by the Leica X2.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age.
