Leica X1 versus Leica T

The Leica X1 and the Leica T (Typ 701) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2009 and April 2014. The X1 is a fixed lens compact, while the T Typ 701 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X1 has a resolution of 12.2 megapixel, whereas the T Typ 701 provides 16.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica T is notably larger (24 percent) than the Leica X1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X1 nor the T Typ 701 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X1 has a lens build in, whereas the T Typ 701 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica X1 vs Leica T

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Leica X1 and Leica T sensor measures

With 16.2MP, the T Typ 701 offers a higher resolution than the X1 (12.2MP), but the T Typ 701 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.79μm versus 5.51μm for the X1). Yet, the T Typ 701 is a much more recent model (by 4 years and 7 months) than the X1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the T Typ 701 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The T Typ 701 indeed provides for movie recording, while the X1 does not. The highest resolution format that the T Typ 701 can use is 1080/30p.

Both the X1 and the T Typ 701 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X1 was replaced by the Leica X2, while the T Typ 701 was followed by the Leica TL.

So what is the bottom line? Which of the two cameras – the Leica X1 or the Leica T – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Reasons to prefer the Leica X1:

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • Ready to shoot: Has a lens build-in, whereas the T Typ 701 requires a separate lens.

  • More modern: Reflects 4 years and 7 months of technical progress since the X1 launch.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the T Typ 701 is the clear winner of the contest (11 : 5 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
