If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X10 is notably larger (10 percent) than the Leica X1. Moreover, the X10 is markedly heavier (14 percent) than the X1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X1 nor the X10 are weather-sealed.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X10 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 70 percent) than the X1, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica X1 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X10 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X10 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the X1 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X10 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Leica X1 and Fujifilm X10 sensor measures

With 12.2MP, the X1 offers a slightly higher resolution than the X10 (12MP), but the X1 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.51μm versus 2.20μm for the X10) due to its larger sensor. However, the X10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 11 months) than the X1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Leica X1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm X10 are ISO 100 to ISO 3200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-12800.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

The X10 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X1 comes with a built-in prime. The X10 has a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 optic and the X1 offers a 36mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Fujifilm provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Leica. The X10 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The X1 writes its imaging data to SDHC cards, while the X10 uses SDXC cards.
