The Leica X1 and the Canon EOS 1100D (labelled Canon T3 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2009 and February 2011. The X1 is a fixed lens compact, while the 1100D is a DSLR. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 12.2 megapixels.

Body comparison

The X1 can be obtained in two different colors (black, silver), while the 1100D is only available in black.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1100D is considerably larger (75 percent) than the Leica X1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X1 nor the 1100D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X1 has a lens built in, whereas the 1100D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Convert to Imperial

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 1100D is 13 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.5 (X1) and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Even though the X1 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 12.2 megapixels. This implies that the X1 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 5.51μm versus 5.15μm for the 1100D), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the 1100D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 4 months) than the X1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

The Leica X1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS 1100D are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The 1100D indeed provides for movie recording, while the X1 does not. The highest resolution format that the 1100D can use is 720/30p.

Feature comparison

The X1 writes its imaging data to SDHC cards, while the 1100D uses SDXC cards.

Both the X1 and the 1100D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The X1 was replaced by the Leica X2, while the 1100D was followed by the Canon 1200D.
