Leica X Typ 113 vs Nikon D1X

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X Typ 113 was launched at a lower price than the D1X, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the X Typ 113 offers a higher resolution of 16.1 megapixels, compared with 5.9 MP of the D1X. This megapixels advantage translates into a 64 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the X Typ 113 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 4.79μm versus 7.92μm for the D1X). In this context, it should be noted, however, that the X Typ 113 is much more recent (by 13 years and 7 months) than the D1X, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size.
The resolution advantage of the Leica X Typ 113 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X Typ 113 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 24.6 x 16.3 inches or 62.6 x 41.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 19.7 x 13.1 inches or 50.1 x 33.2 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 16.4 x 10.9 inches or 41.7 x 27.6 cm. The corresponding values for the Nikon D1X are 15 x 9.8 inches or 38.2 x 24.9 cm for good quality, 12 x 7.8 inches or 30.6 x 19.9 cm for very good quality, and 10 x 6.5 inches or 25.5 x 16.6 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Leica X (Typ 113) has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12500. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon D1X are ISO 125 to ISO 800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 125-3200.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The X Typ 113 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the D1X does not. The highest resolution format that the X Typ 113 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X Typ 113 has one, while the D1X does not. While the built-in flash of the X Typ 113 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Nikon D1X (unlike the X Typ 113) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the X Typ 113 and the D1X have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The D1X was replaced by the Nikon D2X, while the X Typ 113 does not have a direct successor.
