Leica X Typ 113 versus Leica TL2

The Leica X (Typ 113) and the Leica TL2 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and July 2017. The X Typ 113 is a fixed lens compact, while the TL2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X Typ 113 has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the TL2 provides 24.1 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica TL2 is somewhat smaller (5 percent) than the Leica X Typ 113. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X Typ 113 nor the TL2 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X Typ 113 has a lens build in, whereas the TL2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 24.1MP, the TL2 offers a higher resolution than the X Typ 113 (16.1MP), but the TL2 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.79μm for the X Typ 113). Yet, the TL2 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 9 months) than the X Typ 113, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the TL2 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the TL2 provides a better video resolution than the X Typ 113. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the X Typ 113 is limited to 1080/30p.

Feature comparison

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The X Typ 113 and the TL2 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The TL2 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X Typ 113 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the X Typ 113 from Leica.

Summary

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Leica X Typ 113 or the Leica TL2 – has the upper hand? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Reasons to prefer the Leica X (Typ 113):

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • Ready to shoot: Has a lens build-in, whereas the TL2 requires a separate lens.
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (350 versus 250) on a single battery charge.

However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features.

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X Typ 113 or the TL2 handle or perform in practice.
