Leica X Typ 113 versus Leica CL
The Leica X (Typ 113) and the Leica CL (Typ 7323) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2014 and November 2017. The X Typ 113 is a fixed lens compact, while the CL is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X Typ 113 has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the CL provides 24.1 MP.

All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica CL is notably larger (5 percent) than the Leica X Typ 113. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X Typ 113 nor the CL are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X Typ 113 has a lens build in, whereas the CL is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X Typ 113 was launched at a lower price than the CL, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24.1MP, the CL offers a higher resolution than the X Typ 113 (16.1MP), but the CL has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.79μm for the X Typ 113). Yet, the CL is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 2 months) than the X Typ 113, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the CL has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the CL provides a better video resolution than the X Typ 113. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the X Typ 113 is limited to 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the CL has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the X Typ 113 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Both the X Typ 113 and the CL are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The X Typ 113 replaced the earlier Leica X2, while the CL does not have a direct predecessor.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Leica X Typ 113 or the Leica CL – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Advantages of the Leica X (Typ 113):
- Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
- Ready to shoot: Has a lens build-in, whereas the CL requires a separate lens.
- Longer lasting: Can take more shots (350 versus 220) on a single battery charge.
- Easier fill-in: Is equipped with a small onboard flash to brighten deep shadow areas.
- More affordable: Was introduced at a lower price, despite coming with a build-in lens.
- More heavily discounted: Has been available for much longer (launched in September 2014).
Reasons to prefer the Leica CL (Typ 7323):
- More detail: Has more megapixels (24.1 vs 16.1MP), which boosts linear resolution by 22%.

- More modern: Reflects 3 years and 2 months of technical progress since the X Typ 113 launch.
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the CL is the clear winner of the contest (11 : 6 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X Typ 113 or the CL handle or perform in practice.
