Leica TL2 versus Sony RX1R II
The Leica TL2 and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in July 2017 and October 2015. The TL2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the RX1R II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (TL2) and a full frame sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 24.1 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 42.2 MP.
The physical size and weight of the Leica TL2 and the Sony RX1R II are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are presented. All width, height and depth dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony RX1R II is notably smaller (21 percent) than the Leica TL2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the TL2 nor the RX1R II are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the RX1R II has a lens build in, whereas the TL2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica TL2 features an APS-C sensor and the Sony RX1R II a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the RX1R II is 131 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 42.2MP, the RX1R II offers a higher resolution than the TL2 (24.1MP), but the RX1R II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.50μm versus 3.92μm for the TL2) due to its larger sensor. However, the TL2 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 8 months) than the RX1R II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the TL2 provides a higher video resolution than the RX1R II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Sony is limited to 1080/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the RX1R II has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the TL2 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Both the TL2 and the RX1R II are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The RX1R II replaced the earlier Sony RX1R, while the TL2 followed on from the Leica TL.
So what is the bottom line? Which of the two cameras – the Leica TL2 or the Sony RX1R II – has the upper hand? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Arguments in favor of the Leica TL2:
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).

- More detail: Has more megapixels (42.2 vs 24.1MP), which boosts linear resolution by 32%.
- Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
- Easier framing: Has an electronic viewfinder for image framing and settings control.
- More flexible LCD: Has a tilting screen for odd-angle shots in landscape orientation.
- Ready to shoot: Has an integrated lens, whereas the TL2 necessitates an extra lens.
- More compact: Is smaller (113x65mm vs 134x69mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
